Discovering the Islamic Approach to Tackling Climate Change.

The Islamic Discourse on Climate Change | EcoMENA

Islamic teachings and principles offer valuable guidance and solutions to address climate change and promote environmental sustainability. As humans, we have a responsibility to take care of the Earth and safeguard its resources for future generations. The Islamic faith places great importance on the principle of stewardship, which emphasizes this responsibility. We can find this principle in the Quran, which reminds us that we are Khalifa, or trustees, of the Earth. We must preserve our planet’s natural resources and ecosystems, as mentioned in the Quran, “It is He who has made you successors (Khalifa) upon the Earth” (Quran 6:165).

In Islam, balance and harmony are essential. We must maintain balance and harmony in all aspects of life, including the environment. The Quran reminds us of this, “And the heaven He has raised high, and He has set up the balance (Mizan)” (Quran 55:7). This verse underscores the importance of ecological balance and the need to avoid excess and overconsumption.

To protect natural resources and wildlife, Islam encourages two important concepts: Hima (protected areas) and Himayah (protection). These concepts can be applied to preserve various ecosystems, such as forests, water bodies, and endangered species. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) once emphasized the importance of conservation, stating that those who kill any living creature without a just cause, even a small sparrow, will be held accountable by Allah on the Day of Judgment (Sunan Ibn Majah).

In Islam, sustainable development is highly encouraged. It aims to fulfill the needs of the present generation while ensuring that future generations have the same opportunities. This concept, known as Istislah, involves making decisions that benefit society, the economy, and the environment. Islamic scholars have derived this principle from various Quranic verses and Hadiths.

Conservation of water is highly valued in Islam, and it is discouraged to waste this precious resource. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) conveyed the message that even if one is in a flowing river, water should not be wasted (Sunan Ibn Majah). This Hadith highlights the significance of conserving water and avoiding any unnecessary wastage.

Planting trees is highly encouraged in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of afforestation by stating that if a Muslim plants a tree or sows seeds, and a bird, person, or animal eats from it, it is considered a charitable gift (Sadaqah) for them. This Hadith highlights the positive impact that planting trees can have on the environment and the reward associated with doing so.

By seeking the guidance of Islamic scholars and experts, we can understand and put into practice the ethics that underpin our responsibility to care for the Earth. Let us work together to create a better world for ourselves and future generations, one that is sustainable and thriving.
