Digital Burnout: A Modern Plague

Saiful Islam

In today’s digital age, technology has become an integral part of our lives, offering countless benefits. However, excessive reliance on digital devices can lead to a phenomenon known as “digital burnout.” This condition, characterized by physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged exposure to screens, is becoming increasingly prevalent.

Understanding Digital Burnout

Digital burnout can manifest in various ways, including:

  • Physical symptoms: Headaches, eye strain, neck pain, sleep disturbances, and decreased energy levels.
  • Emotional symptoms: Anxiety, stress, irritability, and feelings of overwhelm.
  • Mental symptoms: Difficulty concentrating, decreased productivity, and a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed.

The Holy Quran and Digital Burnout

The Holy Quran, a divine scripture, provides guidance on moderation and balance in all aspects of life. It encourages us to seek knowledge and engage with the world, but also warns against excessive indulgence. For instance, in Surah al-Ma’arij, Allah Almighty says:

  • “And seek refuge in Allah from the whisperings of the devil. Indeed, he is a clear enemy to mankind.” (Surah al-Ma’arij, verse 6)

This verse emphasizes the importance of being mindful of the negative influences that can surround us, including the potential pitfalls of excessive technology use.

Sayings of the Holy Prophet (SAW) and Digital Burnout

The Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) also emphasized the importance of moderation and balance in his teachings. He said:

  • “The best of things are done in moderation.”

This saying can be applied to our use of technology. While technology can be a valuable tool, excessive use can lead to negative consequences.

Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad (May Allah be His Helper) and Digital Burnout

Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad (May Allah be his, Helper ) the fifth Khalifa of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, also addressed the issue of technology and its impact on society. He emphasized the importance of using technology responsibly and wisely, avoiding excessive reliance on it.

Modern Perspectives on Digital Burnout

In addition to religious teachings, modern research has also shed light on the detrimental effects of excessive screen time. Studies have shown that prolonged exposure to blue light emitted by electronic devices can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to fatigue and other health issues. Moreover, the constant stream of information and notifications can contribute to feelings of stress and anxiety.

Combating Digital Burnout

To combat digital burnout, it is essential to establish healthy boundaries and develop strategies to manage screen time. Some effective strategies include:

  • Setting limits: Allocate specific time slots for screen use and stick to them.
  • Taking breaks: Regularly step away from screens to rest your eyes and mind.
  • Engaging in offline activities: Spend time on hobbies and activities that do not involve screens.
  • Practicing mindfulness: Engage in meditation or deep breathing exercises to reduce stress.
  • Prioritizing sleep: Ensure you get enough quality sleep to support your overall well-being.

By implementing these strategies and seeking guidance from religious teachings, individuals can strike a healthy balance between technology and their overall well-being.
